WOLFGANG FLAD BIOGRAPHY

Giacometti said that” the sculpture lies on the empty”. Obviously, the ones from Wolfgang Flad are playing with this. His biomorphique sculptures, or should they better be qualified as “drawings in space”,  are like frozen in a given moment. The empty reveals the material and, vice versa (or conversely), it gets revealed by it.
It appears clearly, that for Flad, the pedestal is integral part of the sculpture. It represents the extension as well as the formal counterpoint.
When it becomes more important, the sculpture transforms to become a bench, a counter, a table, and results in design by the same. Sometimes, Wolfgang Flad, gives up the scultpure for painting. He covers, then excavates by little touches or curved lines his gradations and monochromes, and this until revealing (exposing) the usually obscured substrate.
