JERRY KOWALSKY

Jerry Kowalsky is a painter and sculptor. Cardboard is the characteristic material of Kowalsky’s work. Kowalsky develops mysticism with this profoundly simple and valuable material, surprising the viewer pulling him into the spell of his imaginary parallel world.

JERRY KOWALSKY BIOGRAPHY

Strolling around in an exhibiton of Jerry Kowalsky is a bit like visiting a natural historic museum in which Jivaro’s heads and other vestiges (traces) of the past have been replaced by imposing sculptures in cardboard.
Thick, but flexible, some people would say crude, in the hands of Kowalski, cardboard seems to become organic material.
But tortured material, with steep relief, a raw peeled epidermis made with the help of screws and nails.
Kowalsky never spares his material, neither his subjects actually. His paintings and drawings he realizes in parallel, form a collection
of smeared portraits, fierce look on the faces on those scrutinizing back. Reminding as much Bacon’s ‘Les Etudes’ as the portraits of Soutine.
